bobtheghog.jpgWelcome to Bob the Groundhog's home

Here are some Groundhog Valentine poems our Kindergarteners and First Graders worked on this week:

Groundhogs are hairy
Groundhogs are brown
When it's winter time
They go underground

Groundhogs are weird
Groundhogs are cute
They eat leaves til the day is done
Goodbye

Groundhogs are purple and pure
Groundhogs are red
Groundhogs are brown
Groundhogs are in bed

Groundhogs are brown
Groundhogs are tiny  ;;;;;;;;;;;
Groundhogs are cute
And very, very whiney

Groundhogs are friends
Groundhogs are fun
Groundhogs are brown
And they can run

Groundhogs can dig
Groundhogs can chew
Groundhogs can eat
Then they scootle-do

Groundhogs are special
Groundhogs are brown
Have you seen them in the grass?
Have you seen them in the ground?

Ground hogs are cute
Groundhogs are funny
He'll see his shadow
When it's very sunny

Kindergarteners and First Graders had many good questions about groundhogs for our research week.  We used the links below, and a couple of short videos, to learn that:
Groundhogs eat mostly eat fruits and vegetables
They sleep underground in their dens, which may be under buildings
They can swim and climb trees
They live in some parts of North America, like Maine, but not in Florida,
Texas or California
Groundhogs can get to be several years old
They have 4-5 babies at one time
The babies will hide if they get scared
They are the largest member of the squirrel family
Some of their enemies are dogs and foxes

On the graph above you can see the usual February and March temperatures
in the blue area.  In the red area you can see the temperatures that our
Temperature Team students found on the internet during those six weeks.
After looking at this graph, we voted that the Groundhog was wrong this
year, because we feel like we are having an early spring.
